FoundCloud: María y José,Kings Of The Universe, GoldenFangs
SIS EXCLUSIVE! posted by Veronica Murtagh at 3:30 pm
At its height, MySpace was a valuable resource for the discovery of emerging artists. With its former prominence waning, SoundCloud has arrived a powerful tool for musicians and hotbed of talent ripe for discovery. Each week we’ll showcase three artists we’ve recently found on SoundCloud.
María y JoséThe name María y José is deceptive; the project actually is the work one just one musician, whose name is neither María, nor José. Antonio Jimenez injects the colorful landscape of his home of Tijuana, Mexico into his frenetic tracks. Pairing club rhythms with tropical and Latin sounds, Jimenez presents dynamic, saturated compositions that listen like hanging in the company of an underground of musicmakers in cities to which you’ve never traveled. If you like what you hear below, you can grab a free download of his Kibosé EP at Club Fonograma.
Kings of the UniverseStockholm’s Kings of the Universe have a clear affinity for acid house, ’90s R&B and 2-step garage and they merge these three references across their original and remix material. In much the same way that Juvelen rides the border of cheesy, you want to dislike Kings of the Universe until you realize you’ve had the same song on repeat for six spins and can’t shake the hooks from your head. They don’t seem to care if no one’s making music in these genres anymore; they’re having a fun time and you can’t help but grin and reciprocate their sentiment.
What I Like (Radio Edit) by Kings of the Universe
Woozy electronics, light guitar strumming and ambling vocals mark the style of Sydney’s Golden Fangs. ’60s psych pop and Americana vocal influences bob the surface of the group’s pleasantly unstructured songs. The balance of vocals and backing effects never quite line up, but tumbling in loose disarray, you feel like a spaceman let go out the hatch, looking back at his ship getting smaller in the distance as you spin and drift alone, weightless in the cool, dark sky.
